About Us

Bethany Lewis is the owner of The Canine Academy Training and Behaviour and is based in Newark, Nottinghamshire. She has been an animal lover all her life and has been training animals, particularly dogs for over 6 years professionally, and is currently kept busy by her Beagle, Rufus and Border Collie, Flo. Rufus has retired from a Petcare Science Institute and loves food and sniffing more than anything in the world. Flo is a retired working Collie, but is still very loyal and loves balls more than life itself.

After obtaining a degree in Animal Management and Behaviour, Bethany has worked full time training dogs and cats using positive reinforcement for a well known pet food company. Bethany has has also trained her families Miniature Dachshund to be a Pets as Therapy dog , and having passed all assessments, has been to local nursing homes, bringing joy to the elderly there. Bethany continues to keep her continued professional development up to date and is a qualified accredited trainer with the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers, and is also Canine First Aid Trained.

Bethany has been running classes at local secure fields for over 3 years now, currently using Mutts Go Nutts Paddock in Walesby. These classes have been incredibly popular and sell out quick – take a look at what we offer in our services!

We booked a four week course for our Labrador, Herbie.

The course was perfectly paced and well planned as we were at different levels, with different types of dog.

Bethany’s teaching style was fantastic, she not only taught us how to achieve desired outcomes in loose lead walking, obedience, recall and more but did so with developed steps and games which are easy to remember and fun to continue, and explained the rationale behind these giving us ways to build on these too.

Bethany also had excellent advice on leads, harness and much more. She is clearly exceptionally experienced and gave us a lot of confidence and was able to answer our questions easily and fully.

I have taken SO much from this course, not only are we seeing the results clearly in Herbie, but have some excellent foundations for further development.

I would have no hesitation in recommending The Canine Academy and hope to attend further courses with Bethany in the future.

Our Cocker Spaniel suddenly became very hyperactive and unpredictable following an uncomfortable encounter with an off lead boisterous dog. We attended a zoom reactivity dog training course this evening. Fantastic, informative and fun from start to finish. Plenty of time to ask questions, and lots of practical, achievable goals. As well as a well delivered presentation, that really made sense of what our dogs reactions meant, at the end we had time to be guided through some distraction and focus training with our own dogs! 10/10 from start to finish. Thank you for all your help. I would recommend anyone with a dog to take this session. There was something for everyone to understand and work on. 🐾 Practice makes permanent 🐾

The first training session l and my dog had with Bethany was very relaxed, tasks were explained clearly and so were the reasons why such tasks were useful in the training process. I am the owner of a longhaired standard dachshund who is now 17 and a half months old. He took his beginner's course with The Canine Academy and we both learned a lot. We really enjoyed the classes - four of them on consecutive Saturday mornings- at the very reasonable price of £50.00. We are looking forward very much to the intermediate classes in January! I recommend this organisation very warmly and have done so personally to several people we have met out walking with puppies.
